On routine patrol near Yavapai Vista on October 27th, RRBP Leader Marty Glinsky was able to provide first aid to a visiting 70 year old Cleveland Ohio area hiker who had fallen and gashed open a head wound.

The hiker refused to have the dried blood cleaned off as he wanted to show his wife.

We recently caught up with Forrest Saville, Trails & OHV Coordinator for the Red Rock Ranger District (RRRD).

Forrest, thanks for taking the time to field our questions. We're hearing there's much news on the personnel front at the District. Can you tell us about the changes and how you think they will affect trails in the District?

It is an exciting time on the Red Rock. We have a lot of new faces around the office. Amy, the new district ranger, has been here a few months and she is coming from Bend, OR. She is coming in with a lot of recreation experience and everyone knows Bend is a great place to ride bikes. Chris, our new recreation staff officer (replacing Adam Barnett), is coming from Florida after years running a large military recreation program. He is very excited to be in Sedona, and just happens to be a really nice guy. Also, Kyle Robb will be coming back to the Red Rock for the winter and will be filling in behind Bret Edstrom. I am very excited to have Kyle back on the team. This will be his 4th season here, and it’s going to be a huge help to have him back on the team.

I think this season will be our busiest season that we have ever had. It will be fun to get the new folks out with volunteers and the trail crew to show them what Sedona trails are all about. It’s going to be a great season.

What's the District's maintenance and enhancement plan/goals for the upcoming trail work season?

I think this year will be our biggest year ever. For the first time ever, we are going to have a 10 person trail crew! That doesn’t happen in the Forest Service….anywhere. Most of them are starting mid-October and will be here until mid-April. We are going to maintain at least 250 miles of trail and build at least another 10 miles of new trail. Our big focus this year is finishing Western Gateway! We have a lot of work to do but with all of our volunteer events and youth corps, we know we can get it done.

Special THANKS to all of our partners that help make this happen. We couldn’t do it without the Sedona Red Rock Trail Fund, VVCC, and all the wonderful volunteers.

What's the status of your position with the FS moving forward?

Always a good question – hopefully we are able to move the hiring process along and I will still be here in a year. To be continued…….

    Who cuts your hair?

Let’s just say, I am not a regular at the barbershop. When you only get your haircut every 2 years, they tend to forget you.

Where do you see the District's trail effort five years from now?

With any luck, I will still be here growing the program. We have a lot of interesting projects on the horizon including – Turkey Creek, Rimrock, Camp Verde. 5 years is a long time but one thing I know is that I won’t be bored.

    Any famous last words?

Please reach out and give us feedback from things you are seeing on trail. If you see areas that need work or something that happened that you don’t like. Let me know!

Hope to see everyone out at volunteer events this season!

If you want to see the future of cycling, look no farther than the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League. Founded in 2012, this League is an affiliate of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). The Arizona League consists of 75 teams from all over the State organized into three conferences.

This weekend, we had the opportunity to witness the first day of the league's Prescott race. 331 athletes - boys and girls - in grades 6 thru 8 competed on the 5.75 mile course on Saturday. Another 537 student athletes competed at various distances on Sunday. The Sedona School's MTB Club, consisting of 18 members, was represented at this race.

The races are spread out over two days as Saturday the middle schoolers compete and Sunday the high schoolers have their fun. In between, there are acres and acres of team pits and camping.

There's even an Athletes' Zone, sponsored by Pivot, where no coaches or adults are permitted.

Founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, NICA develops interscholastic mountain biking programs for student-athletes and coaches across the United States. NICA provides leadership services and governance for local leagues to produce quality mountain bike events. NICA has served approximately 40,000 student-athletes. Currently, NICA has 25 state and regional leagues and over 9,000 volunteer coaches who are working annually with over 19,000 student-athletes from nearly 1,000 high schools and middle schools in the USA.

    Saturday's Races:

Race Distance 5.75 miles for all heats.

In the Boys 8th Grade (even bib numbers) race, Sedona's Jackson Maddox came in 6th in 26:14 (13.2 MPH) and was followed by Willie Hunt in 45th place in 36:18 (9.5 MPH).

In the Boys 8th Grade (odd bib numbers) race, Sedona's Luke Shook came in 20th in 27:29 (12.6 MPH).

In the Boys 7th Grade (even bib numbers) race, Sedona's River Valdez came in 2nd in 26:27 (13.0 MPH).

The Boys 7th Grade (odd bib numbers) race, Sedona's Carter Pedersen came in 12th in 0:30:25 (11.3 MPH).

Sedona 7th grader, Conner Hunt, was a race day scratch due to a pulled muscle that occurred late this week running at school.

The Girls 8th Grade race, Sedona's Bronwyn Bosman came in 10th in 30:21 (11.4 MPH) and she was quickly followed by Skyrah Wilmer in 12th place in 30:32 (11.3 MPH).

Of course, it wasn't all racing as the team camped out on Saturday night.

We recently caught up with a very busy VVCC Member Elizabeth McFarland. What follows is a summary of our conversation.

Word on the street is that you've been selected for a prestigious volunteer award. Congratulations. Could you please tell us about the award and what you did to achieve it?

The award was by the Arizona Community Foundation of Sedona and was the Verde Valley’s Spirit of Sedona Volunteer of the Year for 2019.

“How” I came to be a volunteer is because of my parents. Both my parents modeled volunteering and expected me to volunteer. I am modeling volunteerism for the next generation.

“Why” I volunteer is because it is a win-win life strategy. Not only does the organization and community benefit from the volunteer’s efforts, so does the volunteer. Volunteering provides opportunities for building social support networks that benefit both community members and volunteers.

“What” I did to receive the award included, in part, pro bono legal work for many local nonprofits too numerous to list, but including drafting the documents to form the Sedona Red Rock Trail Fund, and also included service on nonprofit boards of directors to take advantage of my legal and business expertise.

Volunteering the hours I do while working full time is only possible with the love and support of my husband Larry Lineberry who mans the home fort and the hard work of my paralegal Lori Arnold who mans the office fort.

Wow! What other volunteer activities have you had?

When serving on the Boards of Northern Arizona Healthcare and the Arizona Community Foundation of Sedona and the Verde Valley, I helped both entities transition to a new board structure, while focusing on the entity’s best interest and striving to enhance each entity’s reputation.

While serving on the ACF Board of Advisors, I chaired the Scholarship Committee where I reviewed applications and awarded scholarships, established an ACF scholarship application training program at Red Rock and Mingus Union High Schools and inaugurated the Verde Valley Cash for College.

Another example of my volunteering to respond to a transition occurred when I represented the Benefactors of Red Rock State Park. After the financial crisis, the State of Arizona swept the budget of the State Parks into the general fund, which meant that Red Rock State Park would close to the public. On behalf of the Benefactors, I negotiated with the Arizona State Parks and the City of Sedona to come up with a solution. The resulting intergovernmental agreements were crucial to keep Red Rock State Park open with its full recreational and education program for the public’s benefit.

How long have you been practicing law?

    Since 1993.

How long has your practice been in the VOC?

    Since January 2002.

What does your practice specialize in?

Estate planning, guardianships and conservatorships, probate, and business transactions.

    What's your next big adventure?

Cycling cruise from Dubrovnik to Venice fall 2020. On a ship small enough to go into all ports, the road cyclists can see less trafficked places (as well as the must-see tourist destinations). For ten days, no unpacking, but riding every day in a different area, sometimes two if the ship travels between islands at lunch.

Are you a roadie, mountain biker or both? Both

Where are your favorite places to ride?

Mountain: Aerie, Campbell’s Mesa, AZ Trail out of Aspen Corner, Brown’s Ranch (Scottsdale), 50 Year Trail (Tucson), Rainbow Rim (North Rim), Phil’s World (Cortez, CO), and Galloping Goose (Telluride/Lizard Head Pass, CO).

Road: Santa Barbara, CA, Lake Mary Road, AZ Highway 179

    Both: Northern Idaho/Eastern Washington/Western Montana

    What are you currently riding?

Road – Specialized Sequoia 27 speed (3x9) - Came perfect stock (just add pedals) from our friends at Absolute Bikes

Mountain – Trek Fuel Ex 8 27.5” 1x12 with disc brakes - Added bar ends, pedals and elliptical chain ring from our friends at Verde Valley Bicycle Company

What advice would you give to the VVCC to better serve its sponsors and members?

As both a member and sponsor of VVCC, I applaud the VVCC Board and its members for all their hard work and dedication. Each director’s efforts have strengthened the community and sense of belonging in Sedona. However, I would suggest, not as a criticism of the current Board, but to improve what is already there, that the VVCC Board actively work to diversify the VVCC Board to include directors with different ages, sexes, races or ethnicities, work status (working or retired), bicycling backgrounds, and professional experience because research shows that a diverse board produces diverse perspectives, which results in better decisions for the entity and its members. VVCC could better achieve its mission by drawing on the skills, talents, and perspectives of a broader and more diverse range of leaders. In my view, the Board itself is a reflection of the organization’s commitment to the community.

VVCC members Sam and Athena Harris are a pair of well known hybrids navigating their way in a land of conformity. Their adventures have been chronicled in the 2019 book - A Pair of Sedona Miracles - by VVCC members Mike and Linda Harris. Five years earlier, Sam Harris was the subject of his own crime drama book - The Returning - by Mike Harris.

We recently caught up with Sam and Athena in an undisclosed location.

Sam and Athena, can you please tell us about your humans?

Both: Our human caregivers are unique in that they give us the respect and admiration our wild side demands, and allow us to have the freedom and flexibility we need in order to adapt to the human lifestyle.

They took us from the confines of The Shelter and provide everything we need or could possibly desire. We guess we will keep them for now.

Why do you like mountain biking?

Both: The two-wheeled mechanical conveyances humans enjoy are ideal in that they allow humans to join us in the land of Sedona at a speed nearly that of our normal capabilities.

What tastes better - rabbit, coyote, deer, rattlesnake or javelina?

Both: Yes to all of the above. Everything tastes exactly like chicken to us, except coyote and javelina. Avoid rabbit in any month which does not possess an “R”.

    What's your favorite local trail?

Sam: You do not know it, and it would be impossible for you to navigate as a biped. It can be found by air if you look down at the earth beyond Submarine Rock in a south easterly direction.

Athena: Turkey Wing, because that is where Kevin decided to let me go and I didn’t come back for 3 hours.

Have you ever ridden a mountain bike?

    Sam: Of course.

    Athena: Not gonna happen.

When you're not with your human, what do you do for entertainment?

Sam: Hop over the wall, enter the golf course, swim in the water and chase coyotes and rabbits until dinnertime.

Athena: Chew up anything not tied down because they had the audacity to leave me home alone.

    What's your favorite potent potable?

Both: Leftover margaritas and occasionally Reds hard apple cider.
